Mayor’s Message: Post Tropical Storm Isaias Update #5: August 9, 2020

Mayor
Dear everyone,

So here is the latest on restoration efforts. There are still over 30,000 homes without power in Westchester County - some progress (but not nearly enough) has been made in our Village.

  • Number of Power Outages: As of right now, Con Ed reports that 97 homes out of 3,553 are still without power in our Village. Power has been returned to the DPW and today all the remaining trees that were blocking roads have been removed. Power has been returned to the Villard/Summit/Hollywood/Forest/Floral area, the Warren/Hudson/Fulton/Cedar area, the Pinecrest area, the Lefurgy/Edgemont/Sunset area, and parts of Broadway. I’m sorry to say there is no status update on other parts of the Village. Crews are working late so the lights might still go on later tonight. You can click HERE for a map that shows which parts of the Village have power outages.
  • Disposing of Spoiled Food: If you want to dispose of spoiled food please take it down to the green food waste containers at the DPW. For more information on how to recycle food waste click HERE – note that you can dispose of meats as well as vegetables. Please remember not to leave any plastic bags in the containers. Also, click HERE for the ConEd website page to fill in a claim for spoiled food.
  • Restoration of Power: The Con Edison website is still promising full restoration by August 10th at 3 pm. Tomorrow Con Ed will continue working on restoring power lines. The goal is to get power to every resident who doesn’t have it as soon as possible.
  • Check your Neighbors: Thanks to all of you who have been checking in on neighbors without power. If you know of a senior who is still without power please let me know ASAP.
  • Internet/Phone: The Hastings Public Wifi is working and is available at the Community Center and the Library. There are outlets for charging phones/computers at those facilities too. Remember that we are still dealing with the covid pandemic so respect the instructions of municipal staff and wear a mask and maintain social distance. For those of you without internet at home we are doing our best to advocate for you on this – we know many of you are working from home and that the internet provides an important lifeline.
  • Cooling Center: The Community Center serves as a cooling center. Please contact recreation@hastingsgov.org if you need this service.
  • Clearing Debris: For those of you who want to know when the DPW will clear the debris please be patient. The Village Manager will circulate a memo explaining what can be collected curbside. In the meantime, the leaf blower ban has been lifted till Sunday August 16th.
  • Pool: The pool remains closed. We will keep you posted on when it will open.
  • Insurance: Remember that most home insurance will cover food spoilage in times of outages and a call to your phone and/or cable providers could result in a credit to your bill if you were out during the storm as well. It’s worth a try!
  • Con Edison Life Support Equipment, Emergencies and Special Services: Residents who use medical equipment can register with Con Edison in case of power outages. Including those residents who do not receive a bill directly from Con Edison. For more information or to fill out a Life-Support Equipment survey click HERE. For Elderly, Blind and Disabled residents register with Con Edison's Senior Direct representatives at 800-404-9097, Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5PM.

Thanks to the many Village staff members who have been working this weekend. Thanks also to community members who have been checking in on seniors and charging phones and computers for neighbors.

Very special thanks to all of you who have been my eyes and ears on the ground (you all know who you are!) – getting ground zero intelligence on what Con Edison is (and even more important isn’t) doing has been invaluable.

As always, please reach out if you have concerns or questions.

Sincerely,

Nicola Armacost
