You're invited to help Hillside Woods this Tuesday and beyond!

Dear Friend of the Woods,

Volunteer opportunities abound! We need 5 volunteers for this Tuesday!

ONE
Forest Restoration in Hillside's Dying Beech Grove
Help us install temporary fencing to protect succession trees

Tuesday March 26, pick one of two sessions: Session 1 - 10:00am-12:30pm; Session 2 - 1:00pm-3:30pm. Rain date: Thursday March 28, same session times.
What to bring: Weather appropriate clothing, work gloves, water and snacks.
Difficulty: This is an easy, family-friendly event.
Why: All beech trees in the region are suffering from a new tree malady, Beech Leaf Disease, which is fatal and has no known cure. Hillside Woods & Park is 12% American beech. When these trees die, no succession trees can replace them without fencing, as deer will eat any tree seedlings. Hastings was awarded a grant that covers 600 linear feet of fencing to protect a section for replanting, and we are installing that next week! Join us! you'll gain a new skill and learn all about beech trees!

RSVP to Aaron Podhurst <apodhurst@hastingsgov.org> by March 25  if you'd like to attend. Include which session in the RSVP!

TWO
Become a fence spotter! Volunteer to patrol Hillside Woods' deer exclosure, to monitor for any damage to the fence. This is critical for the ongoing success of the recovery area. You can volunteer to walk the entire perimeter or any section. You can also volunteer unofficially; simply email hillsidewoods@hastingsgov.org if you see anything amiss, whenever you happen to be in the woods (same email address to volunteer more officially).

THREE
Be a recovery observer. We are in the process of establishing protocols to observe and record biotic changes in the deer exclosure. You will be assigned an area to observe, and protocols to follow for as long as you are willing! We will be comparing changes inside the recovery area with control plots outside the fencing. Email hillsidewoods@hastingsgov.org to volunteer.

Be in touch! Email us if you have any observations or ideas to share.

Best wishes,
