The Village of Hastings-on-Hudson, in concert with ZWAT, Hastings' Zero Waste Advisory Taskforce, is proud to announce a greener, more ethical textile recycling option for our Village.

Dear Hastings Resident,

The Village of Hastings-on-Hudson, in concert with ZWAT, Hastings' Zero Waste Advisory Taskforce, is proud to announce a greener, more ethical textile recycling option for our Village.

Our new partner, Green Tree Textiles, is a nonprofit that donates usable clothing and accessories to charity and recycles unwearable items. Commercial companies generally repackage donations and sell them, often to poorer countries, where unusable fabrics become their waste problem.

The new textile recycling bin is in the southeast corner of the Zinsser Commuter parking lot (aka train station lot), near the bridge overpass. You can drop acceptable items off anytime.

DID YOU KNOW?….the average person throws away 80+ lbs. of clothing per year – for a Village the size of Hastings, that's 687,000 pounds annually! Our goal is to reduce waste and preserve the environment. Providing this easy way to recycle unwanted textiles keeps them out of our garbage, which is incinerated in an aging Wheelabrator facility in Peekskill.

Green Tree:
  • Sorts locally, at a warehouse in The Bronx
  • Donates useable clothing to the needy
  • Transfers items in poor condition to fiber recyclers and rag manufacturers
  • Prevents textile material from entering the waste stream
Accepted Items include:
Used clothing, footwear, cloth household products such as sheets, towels, curtains, and pillowcases. Even if items are old, torn, stained, have missing buttons, broken zippers, etc., they can still be recycled!

However: all items must be clean, dry, grease-free and odor-free (i.e. not stained with solvents such as gasoline, not musty or otherwise contaminated).
  • Clothing: Shirts, pants, jackets, suits, hats, belts, ties, gloves, scarves, socks (even single ones) undergarments, handbags, backpacks
  • Footwear: Shoes, sandals, sneakers, cleats, boots, flip-flops, slippers
  • Household textiles: Curtains, drapes, sheets, blankets, comforters, towels, table linens, throw rugs, pillows
All donations are tax deductible. Just scan the QR code on the bottom of the bin and you will be directed to web-based form to obtain your receipt.
