Sunday,March 31 Nature Walk with Devon Cummings to Kickoff Hastings' 5th Annual Bioblitz

Take a nature walk with Devon Cummings Sunday, March 31st from 3-4pm. Devon is an urban naturalist and botanist who has assisted on our Bioblitzes from the beginning! Devon will identify and discuss what you find in Hillside Woods that day, and also explain the finer points of iNaturalist to help you participate in the Bioblitz. Bring your smartphone!

Meet at the Edgewood & Taft entrance to Hillside Woods. Free.
Everyone is invited to participate in the Bioblitz. Simply download National Geographic's free iNaturalist app and take pictures of anything and everything you see in nature. Whatever you photograph within the 10706 zip code during the month of April will automatically register as part of this community science project. A bioblitz gives a phenological snapshot—i.e. what's happening in nature at a specific time and place—that scientists can use in their research. When conducted every year, it can give a sense of how ecosystems and climate changes over time. It's fun and easy! All you need to do is start taking pictures in the app. New to iNat community science, or need a refresher? Come on the walk! Or: watch the Recording of Patrick McKenzie's 2021 zoom on the topic.

Stay tuned for additional events for Earth Month 2024, including the Rivertowns Clean Energy Expo on April 14, Hastings' Own Spring Thing on April 28, and work sessions throughout the month (and beyond!) on local ecosystem restoration projects.

Sincerely,
The Hastings-on-Hudson Conservation Commission
