Ravensdale Bridge Update - March 25, 2021

UPDATE: Ravensdale Bridge

Assuming no further weather delays, the NYSDOT contractor ECCO III will shut down the Saw Mill River Parkway overnight tonight to begin the structural steel erection.  Southbound traffic will be diverted via Ashford Avenue, and northbound via Route 9A.  As noted in other Village emails, this overnight work is planned to continue through April 2nd, and we will provide additional detail as we are informed.

The closures will allow ECCO III to crane in the large steel sections spanning the Parkway and place them on top of the bridge abutments on either side.  The east abutment is ready, and what remains of the old abutment is buried behind it:

The green rebar on the right will tie into a concrete wing wall yet to be formed that will retain earth behind it.

The west abutment is also ready to receive the steel, and similarly has a wing wall still to be poured wrapped in black plastic protection:

Closer examination of the west abutment reveals the steel pivots upon which the beams will rest.  They actually move under the weight of traffic, snow and temperature changes, and these pivots allow for that without cracking:

A view eastward from the west abutment shows the temporary shoring on this side of the Parkway and the east abutment beyond.  The temporary shoring, which looks like scaffolding, will be used to temporarily support the beams as they are moved into place:

ECCO III is on schedule to open the new Ravensdale Bridge to traffic in June, and we will continue to post exact dates as milestones approach:

  • May: Completion of Bridge Substructure
  • June: Completion of Bridge Superstructure, Utilities, Roadway and Approaches & Opening of New Ravensdale Bridge to Traffic
  • August: Removal of the Temporary Bridge
  • October: Completion of Roadway Reconstruction and Landscaping
We will continue to update you as the project progresses, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have specific concerns.
