Ravensdale Bridge Update - February 15, 2021

UPDATE: Ravensdale Bridge

Since the NYSDOT contractor ECCO III switched the Ravensdale Road traffic over to the temporary bridge last August, they have been busy preparing the foundations for the new bridge.  Piles were driven in November and December to support the concrete footings and walls that are now being formed.

You can see here the new eastern abutment being formed in front of the old one which will be buried beneath the new roadbed:

Following are two closer views, in which you can see the green reinforcement steel bars, or “rebar”, on the right, and the formwork on the left.  The rebar cages are built first, the formwork is constructed out of prefabricated interlocking panels, and then the concrete is poured in stages.

Looking westward you can see the rebar being formed for the west abutment behind the red crane:

To get a sense of the size of the abutment, if you look closely at the bottom, you will see three people working and inspecting the rebar:

The fencing has gone in adjacent to the shared use pathway, and the new trees and shrubs behind it will follow later this year:

ECCO III is on schedule to open the new Ravensdale Bridge to traffic in June.  They plan to begin the structural steel erection Monday March 8th, which will involve shutting down the Saw Mill River Parkway overnight periodically until Friday March 19th, so that they may crane in the large steel sections spanning the Parkway.  Southbound traffic will be diverted via Ashford Avenue, and northbound via Route 9A at Farragut Avenue.  We will provide additional detail as the date approaches.

The schedule remains unchanged or improved, and we will continue to post exact dates as milestones approach:

  • May: Completion of Bridge Substructure
  • June: Completion of Bridge Superstructure, Utilities, Roadway and Approaches & Opening of New Ravensdale Bridge to Traffic
  • August: Removal of the Temporary Bridge
  • October: Completion of Roadway Reconstruction and Landscaping

We will continue to update you as the project progresses, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have specific concerns.

Sincerely,
