Message from the Mayor: Vet Day, SHARE, Survey, Hard hats

Peter Swiderski
Fellow Residents –

Reminders, updates and news:

Veterans Day Celebration
=======================
This Saturday, November 11th, the village’s veterans hold a dignified and short ceremony at 11AM in front of the VFW hall in commemoration of Veterans Day.  It will be followed by a dedication of the Purple Heart Village signs that will be placed next to existing veteran monuments or buildings at four locations around the village.  Through this designation, the Village acknowledges the injuries suffered on our behalf by those wounded in battle. The Village's declaration can be found (HERE)

SHARE Thanksgiving
================
For the 28th year running, Project SHARE will organize volunteers and Hastings High School students, as well as those from other schools, to serve a full Thanksgiving dinner, with all the fixings, to over 750 homeless men, women and children.  They are served by the students in a festively decorated gym at the High School, serenaded by live music. It is a great moment, but they still need further funding. You can do so HERE  Please be generous.

Water Tower survey
=================
We have received at least a thousand responses to date to the survey sent out seeking your input on how to dispose of the iconic water tower. If you have not received one, please write to villageclerk@hastingsgov.org  and one will be sent to you on Monday. This is the last chance to get a replacement survey through the mail – you can also show up next week at the clerk’s office as well. (They’re closed Friday, November 10th as it is a Village municipal holiday).

Crews in Hard Hats
===================
With Building 52 down, you may be noticing crews on the waterfront with what looks like drilling equipment doing mysterious things.  This is the final sampling that BP Arco is mandated by New York State to do to check on PCB levels at various remaining sampling locations. You may have also noticed men in white hats in the vicinity of Ravensdale Bridge – those are County contractor engineers beginning very, very early exploratory work on gauging the shape of that bridge, long overdue for an overhaul.  Any renovation is still a couple of years away, but it begins this way.  Finally, we are at the tail end of the repaving for this year – there’s still a fair amount left and we are now playing beat the clock with the cold.

Speaking of which. Bundle up. Going to get cold this weekend. Winter’s coming.

Sincerely,

Peter Swiderski
