Message from the Mayor: CAMP summary, Purple Heart, Memorial Day reminder

Peter Swiderski
Fellow residents,

A couple of items of importance.

CAMP and the Demolition of 52
==========================
The public meeting on the Community Air Monitoring Plan (“CAMP”) this last Wednesday featured staff from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, BP Arco, and the engineering firm hired by BP Arco to monitor the demolition of Building 52, the remaining structure on the waterfront.  While you can read the CAMP document (HERE), there are several key components worth mentioning.  Demolition of Building 52 will start first with moving trailers and equipment onsite and then removing some asbestos in the building. Then, in August, they will get down to the serious demolition effort and that will proceed into September. It will occur during the day, and not during commuter rush hours. There will be four fixed air monitoring stations and at least two mobile ones that will be used to monitor air quality.  They are linked to a computer monitoring station on site and if dust exceeds the allowable threshold (which is set at a fraction of unsafe levels), an alarm will be issued and work will stop immediately while the cause is investigated.  All debris will be removed by barge, and while there will be some heavy traffic through town to bring equipment to the site, it will be relatively limited in nature.  The Village will also bring in its own engineer to spot-check that BP’s engineer is fully compliant with all protocols.

Purple Heart Resolution
=====================
The Board of Trustees tabled a resolution honoring veterans who have won the Purple Heart at the last meeting on request of several residents who sought to consider the resolution and to weigh in. We have posted on the Village website a draft copy of the resolution honoring veterans who have won the Purple Heart (HERE).  It has been reviewed and approved by members of VFW Post 200 and American Legion Post 1195.  The Board intends to vote on this resolution at its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 6th.  We are accepting your comments and any suggested changes to the resolution via email to board@hastingsgovorg or by letter to the Village Clerk, (address:  Village Clerk, Attn: Purple Heart Resolution, Village Hall, 7 Maple Avenue, Hastingss-on-Hudson, NY 10706). They should be submitted by Friday, June 2nd so we have a chance to consider them prior to the meeting.  Please note that all correspondence with the Village on this or any issue is open for public inspection and will be a part of the record.

Memorial Day
=============
A reminder: we have our Memorial Day parade and service this Sunday at 2PM, and it promises to be memorable.  A contingent of 25 marines and 25 navy personnel will be participating, and we will have a distinguished guest Major General John Love of the 2nd Marine Division. The parade will feature fire engines, marching bands, scouts, volunteer firemen - the works. The parade kicks off by Reynolds Field at 2PM and works its way down Main Street, turns right on Warburton through the downtown, and then loops around North Street back up Maple where it ends.  It is followed by a brief service to honor the fallen at the VFW plaza.    Please join us on Sunday – weather is promising and the day will be memorable.

Sincerely,

Peter Swiderski
Mayor
