Message from the Mayor:  Holiday events, Giftique, Resolutions

Mayor
Fellow residents,

The holidays continue around us, the downtown lit up, store windows decorated, restaurants full of good cheer.  A time for community, friends, cheer.

Holiday festivities continue

Solstice Celebration  -  Friday, December 21 from 6PM to 8PM
A few of Hastings' illustrious residents have put together a marvelous procession with colorful lanterns and light sculptures. It starts at the VFW and then goes through town to celebrate the winter solstice. It ends up at Draper Park for a bonfire, drumming, and hot cocoa.  More here https://www.facebook.com/events/243501689661644/

Giftique
=========
A tradition every holiday season, the Friends of the Hastings Public Library present the annual Holiday Giftique & Bake Sale. This is a low-key way to get some stocking stuffers and baked goods for reasonable prices while supporting the library.  It’s this Saturday, Dec. 15, 9:30 am to 5:00 pm  &  Sunday Dec. 16, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.   It includes holiday books, jewelry, small gifts, the hand-knit blanket raffle and delicious homemade baked good.  The library is also running a great raffle with prizes provided by many of the stores and restaurants in town. Check it out when you are in the Library for the Giftique.

Resolutions on Yemen and Drivers Licenses
======================================
Two resolutions are on the Board’s agenda on Tuesday for our review.
The first (HERE) regards a statement of support by the Board for a NY State law to allow for providing driver’s licenses to immigrants regardless of their immigration status or documentation.  Resolutions like this are being passed by a number of communities (including recently by Dobbs Ferry)  to provide evidence of broad support for this bill.  The resolution, here, emphasizes that the core rationale here is safety – that drivers licenses both impose a driver’s exam and also mean you can get insurance.
The second resolution (HERE) is a statement in support of a congressional investigation of the US support for the war in Yemen and a cut-off of funding for that war. This resolution was brought to the Board of Trustees by the Concerned Families of Westchester and placed on the agenda through the support of two trustees.

If you would like to share your thoughts, in support or opposition of either resolution, please write us at board@hastingsgov.org.  (Your email in will become part of the record and can be read by anyone who requests to do so.)

The Crawl last week was a huge success, and the sweetest result is that over $2,000 was raised as a by-product of that fun event for the Hastings Food Pantry – a needed shot of funds right during the moment where people most need the help.  A nice outcome and a great effort by our Downtown Advocate, Barb Prisament, and her merry band of assistant elves. Thanks!

Enjoy this season, if you can stop to draw a breath and relax to enjoy the moment.  All the best!

Sincerely,

Peter Swiderski
