Mayor’s Message – Waterfront Concerts Start Tonight, The Drs. Clark, Jazz on Sunday and HoH Best in Westchester Winners

Mayor
Dear everyone,

Despite the rain of the last few days it looks like we came away relatively unscathed (certainly compared to some of our neighbors to the north…) and we are thrilled to be launching our summer concerts series.

Waterfront Concerts –Tuesday July 11, 18 & 25, 7 to 9 pm MacEachron Park
Tonight is our first Waterfront Concert of the season (see HERE), and our guest performers will be Radio Free Honduras (a smash hit from last year). After this evening, there are two more concerts – one this coming Tuesday, July 18th featuring Spuyten Duyvil and Friends (the band reunited for us!!) and one the following Tuesday, July 25th featuring Nafesh Mountain. See HERE for more details on all the bands and remember the events are rain or shine, since Angelo at Harvest has agreed to let us all move inside in case of inclement weather. Very special thanks to everyone who makes these concerts happen: Angelo and his team at Harvest; Barb Prisament, our Downtown Advocate; Jen and Raf our IT team; as well as Lisa O’Reilly and the Parks and Recreation team. So save the dates, pack a picnic and enjoy the sunsets, the stunning views of the Palisade and the great music.

The Drs. Clark and Their Circle – Wednesdays: July 12 & 26, Aug 16 & 30, 12 pm Library
Our Library will be holding a series of events (discussion, lectures and films), about the fascinating people who were connected to Drs. Mamie and Kenneth Clark. The Drs. Clark, nationally recognized figures involved in the civil rights movement, lived in Hastings for many years and brought up their children here. The first Library event which will take place on July 12, is a discussion of The Fire Next Time, by James Baldwin. For more on the subsequent events see HERE.  Each of these events leads up perfectly to our October 14th street dedication (save the date!) where we will be naming a portion of Mt. Hope Blvd. in their honor.  More on that later!

Hastings On Jazz – Sunday: July 16, 3 to 5:30 pm VFW Plaza
The weekend weather has been ghastly for most of July but we are hoping this Sunday will be different our free summer jazz concerts continue at the VFW Plaza on Warburton Avenue from 3 to 5:30 pm. Hastings On Jazz (see HERE) is a weekly concert series from the Hastings Jazz Collective, led by our own David Janeway. This week, the featured guests will be: Scott Reeves, trombone; Allan Namery, sax/flute; David Kingsnorth, bass; and Bruce Cox, drums. There is jazz at the VFW every Sunday from June through September (see HERE for who is playing when).  Bring a blanket/folding chairs and a picnic, grab ice-cream from Penny Lick or visit the hot dog stand, and enjoy the show!

Our Very Own “Best in Westchester”
A shout out to the Hastings-based businesses who received accolades in the July issue of Westchester Magazine featuring the "Best Of Westchester"(see HERE). Harvest On Hudson received three awards: "Best Drink with a View," "Best Outdoor Dining (Waterside)" and "Best Restaurant in the Rivertowns." Hastings Yoga won "Best Yoga Studio" with Mary-Ann Mastreani as "Best Yoga Teacher." Bread & Brine won for "Best Lobster Roll," Saint George Bistro won for "Best French Restaurant", and "Events to Remember" for “Best Event Planner”.  Do make a point of offering your congratulations if you stop by.

As always, to plan ahead, check out Destination Hastings and Upcoming Community Events (which is the link posted in the Board of Trustees Agenda each month).

See you tonight at the Waterfront – the sunset should be stunning!

Sincerely,

Nicola Armacost
