Mayor’s Message – Lovely Gestures, Gratitude and Some Requests

Mayor
Dear everyone,

At this time of year many of us want to be able to give back in appreciation for all the riches we’ve received and before year’s end there are still some opportunities to do that right here in Hastings.

The Pay It Forward Boutique for Children
Our Recreation Department has set up a pay it forward boutique for children at the James Harmon Community Center.  It is a place where kids can “shop” for gifts for someone they want to thank, and the only payment is an act of kindness. The boutique is open today from 3:30 to 4:30 and all kids are welcome. Very special thanks to the anonymous donor who provided all the gifts and of course to our Parks and Rec team.

Gratitude and Help Still Needed
Thanks to everyone who supported the Family-to-Family toy drive and senior gift drive. If you didn’t get a chance to contribute yet this year, but want to support their ongoing efforts, you can click HERE.  Thanks also to everyone who supported Toys for Tots - Westchester which ensures that thousands of less fortunate children across Westchester get a gift this Christmas.  It turns out they still need help sorting toys over the next few days if you can spare an hour or two. The warehouse is in the old St Matthews school gym at 16 Villard (corner of Villard and Broadway) and they will be there 9 to 5 today through Friday (drive around the back and down the ramp to get in). Click HERE for the sign-up link and note that if you do decide to go help it's cold in there so dress warmly!

Clearing Sidewalks
If you still have leaves covering the sidewalks outside your home it would super if you could remove them so that they don’t pose a sliding hazard for friends and neighbors when wet. You can “love ‘em and leave ‘em” which basically means composting them on your property somewhere or mowing them into your lawn to create fertilizer. Alternatively you can bag them for the DPW to remove. Also, a reminder that if it snows you are responsible to clear the sidewalks adjacent to your home and it’s much easier to do that when the leaves have already been removed! If you need help with snow removal during the winter season (or if you have a student who wants to offer help) contact the Youth Employment Service (YES) by emailing Jill Iturbe HERE. Please include a phone number and address.  Thanks in advance to all our youth who sign up to help!

Vine Squad
During the winter a wonderful and immensely satisfying local volunteer activity is the Vine Squad. They save our trees by removing invasive vines from the trunks and limbs. The tools you need are provided – all you need to do is show up on a Saturday between 11 and 1 pm in the designated spots. To join the mailing list and find out when the next lop is scheduled, click HERE … it is a great way to meet other residents!

Virtual Resident Parking Sticker
If you haven’t already purchased your virtual resident parking sticker, don’t forget to do so before January 1, 2023. The virtual sticker is valid from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023 and must be renewed yearly. It is only required for parking at the Zinsser Commuter Lot and the Con Ed (Southside Avenue) lot which is next to Maud’s Tavern. This sticker allows you to park in both of those lots at metered spaces. Click HERE to sign up. The fee is $10.00 per virtual sticker, plus a convenience fee (there will be no physical sticker for your vehicle).  A copy of the vehicle registration must be uploaded before completing the application. The registration must have your Hastings-on-Hudson address.

Wishing all of you a magical winter solstice!

Sincerely,

Nicola Armacost
