The Library’s Reopening

The Library: A limited edition

How to begin? “At long last” or “Not so fast”?
Like any glass-half-empty/half-full situation, it’s a matter of perspective.
Yes, the Library doors open this Monday, July 13th, but no, not without the roll call of restrictions and protocols an intractable, undetectable coronavirus requires.
Our welcome mat is a balance ball.
We’re inviting you in, but not to stay: 10 patrons at a time, for no more than 30 minutes, solely to browse and check out materials.
Covering your face is de rigueur; resting your feet is verboten. In other words, there’s a table with masks, gloves and sanitizer, but no seating. The computers and bookshop are off-limits.
Magazines and periodicals can be borrowed on the honor system, in the hope they’ll be returned in short order for others to enjoy.
We have followed the guidelines of the state’s Phased Reopening Plan and also incorporated worthwhile practices proposed and used throughout the Westchester Library System.
Hours are 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday; 3-7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
Meanwhile, “curbside” delivery (actually accessed at the lower-level entrance) continues.
Hold requests made via phone or email can be picked up Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., and Monday-Thursday, 3-7 p.m.
Bringing the Library back to life while keeping everyone — our staff in particular — safe is a challenge. It’s ironic that the word pandemic comes from the Greek pan meaning “all” and demos meaning “the people,” the very same terms that define the Library’s role in and commitment to our community.
The Hastings Library misses you, needs you, and urges you to follow the cautionary steps outlined here in the spirit of mutual expectation that in a not-too-distant future there will me more and more opportunity to do what we do best: share.
