Franz Schubert, in his 31 short years, produced a remarkable amount of amazing chamber music, along with a staggering output of gorgeous songs, setting some of Germany’s greatest poets to music. On May 12 we will hear cellist Peter Seidenberg play the Arpeggione Sonata, a technically demanding piece originally written for a then new instrument, the arpeggione, that never quite caught on. Happily, the transcription for cello is completely faithful to the original so we can hear this piece in all its glory. We will also present one of Schubert’s final works, the great Piano Trio in Bb. We pay tribute to Schubert’s songs with two contemporary pieces. Philippine born composer Nilo Acala has composed a song inspired by one of Schubert’s that RiverArts commissioned for this concert. Written for soprano, violin, viola, and cello, “All the Beauty We Behold” adds an exceptional tone to the afternoon. And Michael Ching’s “Arrangements and Derangements, Interpretations of Schubert”, rounds out the program.
