Why Compost?

Organic waste comprises thirty percent of household trash going into Westchester incinerators, where it has no chance to decompose and offers very little BTU value. Homeowners who compost not only extend the life of our incinerators and reduce the cost of collecting household garbage, but also recycle the nutrients in organic waste to create a valuable soil amendment for their gardens.

The products for sale on this page facilitate backyard composting, where an individual collects their organic waste and composts it on site. This has a small carbon footprint and creates compost for use in your garden.

An alternative is municipal food scrap recycling, a program that does not require the products for sale on this page or a backyard. Many Westchester communities are launching these programs which allow residents to collect food scraps they would not be able to compost in their backyard, including bones, dairy, fish and meat. The food scraps are brought to drop-off bins where they are hauled to a commercial compost facility, mixed with yard waste and turned into compost. If you are a resident of Greenburgh and would like to participate in our food scrap recycling program, please visit greenburghnaturecenter.org/getinvolved/food-scrap-recycling/
