In spring of 2018 resident group HOHSkate presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission regarding the need for construction of skatepark in Hastings. The group provided research and information as well as a petition of support by the community signed by more than 950 Hastings residents. Over the past 3 years, they continued to attend meetings and to advocate for the creation of a skatepark in Hastings. The Parks & Recreation Commission identified 2 possible sites as appropriate sites in accordance with published guidelines for a successful skatepark. These were:

1.) school property at the Burke Estate field approx. 100 feet up the driveway off Farragut Ave,

2.) the upper parking lot at Zinsser Field.

After many meetings and much discussion, in October 2020 the Parks & Recreation Commission voted 4 to 3 in favor of developing the Zinsser site for the skatepark..

However, the Parks & Recreation Commission emphasized that they feel that both sites meet the criteria outlined for successful skateparks and that both sites remain potentially available for consideration by the Board of Trustees.

The Parks and Recreation Commission then moved to identify the creation of skatepark as our number one priority for capital budget request before the Mayor and Board of Trustees. The capital budget asks were presented in early May, 2021. The Mayor and the Board of Trustees deferred the skatepark project from this year’s budget to 2022-2023 budget and identified Zinsser as the preferred site for the project.

The Parks and Recreation Commission as well as HOHSkate was given the goahead to proceed with the process of following-up with Zinsser as the site for the skatepark. This, of course, includes discussing and addressing concerns/ questions  of residents and in particular, those living near Zinsser Park.
