Con Ed has informed us today that they will begin the work to replace a failing underground transformer located underneath Spring St. on Monday January 13, 2020. This job is expected to last approximately five days and crews will be working between the hours of 9:00 AM to possibly 11:00 PM. The Con Ed supervisor explained that this is a high priority emergency transformer replacement. The current underground transformer is in poor condition and if this transformer was to fail it would cause a power outage for all of Spring St and downtown Warburton Ave.
On Monday January 13, 2020 Con Ed plans to park a temporary generator/ transformer about the size of a van on Spring St., this transformer will occupy two of the parking spaces located on the north side of Spring St. Con Ed will then disconnect the power cables from the failing underground transformer and connect them into the temporary generator / transformer, this will be done so there will be a minimal loss of power and businesses can remain open during the operation.
Con Ed will then dig up the old transformer and replace it with a new one. During this process there will be some roadway excavation and brief roadway closures but for the most part the roadway will remain open.
It is recommended that unless necessary you avoid driving on Spring St during this job as traffic will become an issue. Con Ed will provide flaggers for traffic control.
