Message from the Mayor: Water Tower Survey, Tree Lighting and Crawl, Toy Drives, Heroism

Peter Swiderski
Fellow Residents,

News and events coming up, and a shout out for everyday heroism.

Survey Results Tabulation
=======================
We have received a very decent response from the survey regarding the fate of the water tower, with around 2,000 surveys returned.  We will be tabulating the responses this Tuesday night, starting at 6PM, in the court room in the Municipal Building – all are welcome to attend and observe the count.  We will publish out the result shortly thereafter.  Based upon the response, either BP Arco will be informed that they can demolish the structure or we will begin the work of issuing a request for proposals from contractors to disassemble and store the water tower, which we would expect to occur in 2018.

Light up the Night/Friday Night Crawl
===============================
This coming Friday, we enjoy both the Holiday Tree lighting and the latest iteration of the Hastings Crawl that so many of us have made a tradition. Tree lighting commences in the Community Center at 6PM with music, hot chocolate and cookies, the lighting of the tree, an amazing model train display, and the visit of a special visitor.  There is also a collection of toys for children and items for vets.

The Crawl also begins at 6PM to 10PM and the mechanics are easy: you buy a booklet of Crawl tickets at any one of many locations (Boro6,Bread&Brine, 40North, Harvest, Juniper, Maud’s, The Mill, Penny Lick, Suburban Renewal, Community Center and Municipal Building) for $20.  The Crawl booklet has five tickets, which will get you *something*, whether an appetizer, dessert, drink or something at any one of just about all of Hastings’ restaurants. The idea is that you gather with a band of your friends, each get a booklet, and go from venue to venue over the course of the evening, sampling the foods from the various restaurants and basically having a blast.  A number of stores are open later that night Extra bonus: 25% of the ticket sales goes to the Hastings Food Pantry, right in time for Holiday season, raising well over a thousand dollars each of the past few years.  Full info here: (http://www.rivertownsguide.com/DestinationHOH ).

Toy Drives
==========
Two ways to give:
Family-to-Family runs a drive for toys and wrapping paper for local families.  The Hastings Youth Advocate Program then helps local HoH moms and dads pick just the right gift to wrap up and take home for their kids. Drop your gifts and wrapping supplies at Family-to-Family’s office at 416 Warburton from Monday to Friday 10AM to 5PM. They ask that you text before coming at 914-391-3220.
The Toys for Tots program, sponsored by the Marine Corps (www.t4twestchester.org) sends toys to under-privileged children in Westchester.  Unwrapped toys for children (ages infant to age 18) should be dropped off at collection boxes at the Recreation Center and the Police office in the Village Hall (turn right when you got through the front door) thru December 19th.  You can also drop off your gifts at the Holiday Tree Lighting (see above), where the local Toys for Tots team will be there to collect them.

Heroism
========
A bit more than a week ago, we had a frightening incident on 9A, by Jackson Avenue, in front of the Westchester Manor catering hall, when a man and a woman driving through town stopped and their argument led to a horrific assault with an ice pick on the woman.  If it weren’t for the intervention of Jeff Michael, a history teacher and coach up at Pearl River who happened on the scene, we would likely have had a different outcome.  I’ve thanked Jeff for a life saved and a demonstration of everyday bravery to which we all aspire were we in a similar position.

As we head into the holidays, a reminder to shop locally first before reaching for the cheap thrills of cyber shopping. The Holiday season is what makes the year profitable for any number of our local stores, so if you have ever complained or wondered about empty storefronts, this is your chance to put your money where it works best – locally.
All the best in this season of light – I hope to see you at the Light up the Night event on Friday at 6PM at the Community Center or at one of the restaurants in town hosting the Crawl.

Sincerely

Peter Swiderski
