Message from the Mayor: Storm Update – Evening - 5-March-2018

Peter Swiderski
Fellow residents,

I wanted to share a quick update ahead of tomorrow, as promised, so everyone is aware of where things stand.

  • One Con Ed truck showed up in town during the day, and helped open Broadway, it was not equipped to depower lines (!!?? – huh?) and so no other streets were cleared. (They were able to move wires and branches so that Broadway could be re-opened – it didn’t require depowering.)  Another line truck showed up tonight, empowered to depower, and opened Farragut (!), so the situation tomorrow with the school reopening will be less… difficult.  The focus tomorrow will be on reopening streets ahead of the storm.

  • Based on what we heard and have seen to date, we do not believe that we will see the sort of repowering of homes tomorrow indicated on the Con Ed website (which predicts power will be restored to 90% of Hastings by 11:00PM Tuesday night). Perhaps things will pick up speed and our pessimism will be negated. But. It would be prudent if you are in an unpowered house to plan for the likely worse scenario. And if your house isn’t repowered by tomorrow, Tuesday night, Con Ed is not likely to work in the midst of the northeaster on Wednesday, so the earliest you could expect to be repowered would be later on Thursday or even Friday. Not great news.

  • Speaking of weather, we face another northeaster this Wednesday (8-12 inches of heavy snow) (we will ignore early indications of another storm for next Sunday or Monday for now). This is not good news for those that are out of power. Assuming that your power is not restored by tomorrow, we urge you to find alternate accommodations.  It’s only going to get colder. While temperatures are not expected to dip much below 30, there is a chance of freezing pipes now that homes have likely lost all their latent heat. You should leave all your faucets on a low but steady drip starting tonight. This will help prevent your pipes from bursting.

  • If you need shelter, the Andrus Home is generously offering a limited number of rooms. Please contact the Police Department if you need shelter (914-478-2344).

  • For everyone else, we request that when the storm begins, you get your car off the street – plowing around a car means that the equivalent of two car-lengths is unplowed. Keep an eye on your unheated neighbors (those that insist on remaining) and be wary of falling limbs.

This crisis too is likely to pass, at least until Sunday.

Sincerely,

Peter Swiderski
