Message from the Mayor: Gas Moratorium, Downtown Volunteers, New Stores

Mayor
Fellow Residents,

News regarding a moratorium declared by Con Ed, a search for volunteers, and some more stores opening downtown.

Natural Gas Moratorium
====================
Con Ed has just announced a far-reaching policy to limit new hook-ups for natural gas. Con Edison claims that demand for natural gas has outpaced its availability due to “pipeline constraints in a portion of (their) service area” and that they will not be accepting any new requests for hook-ups for residential or commercial clients. This has potentially profound impacts on development throughout Westchester. We are assessing what this may mean for residents, businesses and future development. However, since Con Edison has indicated that applications for hook-ups will only be accepted if submitted by March 15th, we are putting this notice out with a link (HERE)  where you can read more. We do not have any more information to offer on this, so please reach out to Con Ed if you believe you may be affected. The State’s utility regulator plans a broad review of this issue, but until that is completed, we have to assume that the moratorium is real and become operant after mid-March.  More on this later, I am sure.

Downtown Improvements
====================
We’ve asked two residents, Cassandra Sweet and Susan Maggiotto, to jointly lead the effort to prioritize changes for assessing plans for downtown improvements.  They are seeking to establish a working group to help on this effort and are looking for a few dedicated volunteers. Those interested in participating in the downtown improvements working group, please send your CV and the completed form found (HERE) outlining your motivation by February 10th to volunteer@hastingsgov.org. Thanks in advance for your interest and support!

Speaking of the Downtown
========================
Even in these quiet period after the holiday, there is activity downtown. Our Downtown Advocate, Barb Prisament, mentions that resident Bettina Dascoli has opened the gracefully designed “Hastings Sewing Studio” at 2 Spring Street (https://hastingssewing.com) and that her classes are filling up.  Another Hastings resident, Jessica Mullins, plans to open her “Found Herbal” shop at the site of the current Village Balloon and Flower Shop, which is sadly closing mid-month. The opening is planned for the Spring.

Sincerely,

Peter Swiderski
Mayor
