Message from the Mayor: Events, and more

Fellow residents,

A lot going on this weekend, and other updates worth mentioning. Hopefully the rougher weather holds off.

Friday Night Live, Friday, June 1st, 6PM
================================
Themed “Old Fashioned Street games”, this Friday Night Live will have an exhibition by the National Double Dutch League at 7PM (no, for real, you will have to drag everyone you know to see it), and Stoop Ball, Hit the Penny, Box Ball, Marbles,  Hopscotch, live music with Radio Prison, an event at Nigel’s, food, and more. Always a great way to spend the early evening with friends and family. We hope the weather is kind. We are currently planning to move ahead and hope for the best. More HERE

RiverArts Music Tour, Saturday, June 2nd, 12PM to midnight
=======================================================
This is the 4th annual iteration of this event, and with 120 performances (!!!!) across 36 venues in Hastings, Dobbs, Irvington and Tarrytown (but mostly Hastings). It’s cleverly set up so that these performances run on the hour with a suitable intermission between each so you can get to the next one. You can see everything from student bands to Grammy Award-winners, all free. Rain or, preferably, shine. Set out with your friends and make a day of it. The High School Jazz Barbecue, which has been around longer than this event, is on from 1PM to 3:30PM in the Hastings High School courtyard. When we say “barbecue”, we mean actual honest-to-God barbecue cooked up by Mr Jernigan, and sold for a very reasonable price while you are serenaded with jazz classics. Details HERE.

 Library Fundraiser, Sunday, June 3rd
================================
The Friends of the Library support the library in many ways and on their 60th birthday, they are throwing a Broadway Musical-themed fundraiser(from 5pm to 9pm at the library), starring Hastings’ own resident honest-to-God Broadway stars (performances start at 6:30), as well as light refreshments and a silent auction. Tickets are $30 in advance for adults (available at the library) and $35 at the door, $20 for teens. All proceeds support children’s programs. Click HERE for more information

Summer Concert Series
=====================
Speaking of music, we are pleased to announce a major addition to our Village summer scene. The Village is co-sponsoring a new summer concert series here in Hastings - the River Spirit Music Waterfront Concert Series - with 5 free concerts at MacEachron Park. The concerts will be on Tuesday evenings starting at 7pm. The first show is June 26th with singer-songwriter Susan Werner, underwritten in part by City Winery. Bring your blankets, festival chairs and the kids! Mark your calendar for subsequent dates including July 3, July 17, August 7 and August 21, all with professional performers.  Food and beverages will be available to purchase at the Park or stop by one of our participating Downtown Hastings restaurants and pick up a special “to go” meal for the sunset concerts (Go to the Waterfront Concert Series website for more information on the dates and a list of participating Downtown Hastings restaurants.)

Exchange Students
================
Hastings families and Hastings High School have hosted exchange students for the last decade. This is the act, the antidote to what separates us, by bringing young people from other countries and cultures together, and helping build the understanding that bridges our divides. If a family is interested in learning more about hosting an exchange student next year, please email Anthony.mayer@afsusa.org

Constellation
=============
Just a reminder that you likely receive your electricity supply from Constellation Energy via a joint agreement with other Westchester communities: they are the new “default” electricity supplier for the Village, supplying green energy at 8 cents per kWh from 100% renewable sources. You may be receiving solicitations from other electricity providers (known as Energy Service Companies, or ESCOs) which offer green electricity supply. One such solicitation recently offered electricity supply at 9.10¢ /kWh, but not at a fixed rate. Such offers are rarely if ever as beneficial to you as the one the village has arranged. If your Con Ed bill indicates you are getting your power from another ESCO other than Constellation, and you would like to purchase 100% renewable electricity at an excellent fixed rate, contact Westchester Power.  You can opt in HERE.

Historical Society Lecture and Meeting June 10 3:00PM
===============================================
The Hastings Historical Society has its annual meeting (all of 15 minutes) at the Orr Room at the Library followed by a lecture at 3:15 entitled “Up at Dudley’s Gorge”, which explores 19th Century Steamboat Excursions up in the country (to Hastings-on-Hudson)  back in the 1870s. This lecture traces the path of a particular excursion (the St. Patrick Benevolent Association) to a picnic area called Dudley's Grove, on the Hastings/Yonkers border.  Yet excursion fun carried risks and conflicts, as excursionists sometimes came into conflict with local law enforcement, and some neighbors viewed excursions as depraved. Ms. Plater uses photos and historical accounts to take us back in time to July 14, 1878.

A wonderful time of the year to get out, be with your neighbors and friends and enjoy the cultural richness of your community. Join us.

See you around town,

Peter Swiderski
