Mayor’s Message: the Carbon Almanac Launch Event (today!!), Jazz and More Waterfront Concerts

Mayor
Dear everyone,

Yesterday, we learned that the climate and tax packages that have been under negotiations by the Federal government at the Senate level are dead in the water. Those of us who are part of the Climate Mayors Network are clear that the burden of making the changes we all know are urgently needed, come down to local actions now more than ever. We agree that if the Federal government can’t work out how to make decisions that focus on keeping our planet habitable for future generations, we need to take meaningful actions ourselves to move the dial. It is a massive, daunting, existential crisis type issue, but rather than feel despondent about it, come on down to the Farmers Market today and pick up a copy of the Carbon Almanac (see HERE for details) to learn what you can do to be part of the solution and make a make a difference for our planet.

Carbon Almanac Launch (and World Record Setting Attempt) – TODAY: July 16, 8:30 till the books run out … Hastings Farmer’s Market
Not only can you pick up a signed copy of the Carbon Almanac, by doing so you will be participating in a world record setting attempt.  Our own Seth Godin, part of the brain trust behind the Almanac, will be signing copies at the Farmer’s Market as soon as it opens. Over a 24 hour period, copies of the Almanac will be signed by the hundreds of authors who contributed to the project at signing events all over the planet (see HERE). The goal is to set a world record for the largest number of signings in one day. If you're not in town, no worries, you can pop by Galapagos Books when you get back or pick up a copy HERE.  The Almanac provides practical advice and useful information on what we can each do to address climate change.  As the book’s tag line states, “It's not too late ...”

Hastings On Jazz – Sunday: July 17, 3 to 5:30 pm VFW Plaza
On Sunday Hastings On Jazz continues at the VFW Plaza on Warburton Avenue from 3 to 5:30 pm. Hastings On Jazz (see HERE) is a weekly concert series from the Hastings Jazz Collective – this week the focus will be on Brazilian jazz with special guest vocalist Beatriz Malnic. There is jazz at the VFW every Sunday from June through September.  Bring a blanket/folding chairs and a picnic, grab ice-cream from Penny Lick or visit the hot dog stand, and enjoy the show!

Waterfront Concerts – Tuesday July 19 and 26, 7 to 9 pm MacEachron Park
Our Waterfront Concerts began last Tuesday, and despite the weather the first concert was a big success. The band, Radio Free Honduras, was set up to play in MacEachron Park, but it started to rain and Harvest on Hudson graciously agreed to let the band play inside. Very special thanks to Angelo and his team as well as Barb Prisament, our Downtown Advocate and Lisa O’Reilly and the Parks and Recreation team for being so agile in adjusting to the elements.  There are two more concerts – one this coming Tuesday featuring Slavic Soul Party and one the following Tuesday featuring Tony Trischka, Bruce Molsky and Michael Daves (see HERE). So save the date and do join us to enjoy the sunsets, the stunning views of the Palisade and the great music.

See you at the Farmer’s Market!

Sincerely,

Nicola Armacost
