Mayor's Message: The Final Set of Birthday Drive-Bys - Covid-19 Acts of Kindness #22 May 30, 2020

Mayor
Hi everyone,

Our First Responders will be making their final birthday drive-by run today (at least for now …).  You can find the list of places they’ll visit below. If she were with us today, my grandmother would say that notes of appreciation go a long way.  And so, if you’ve enjoyed this short tradition please drop the Chiefs a note at: firechief@hastingsgov.org, they will definitely appreciate the recognition!

Chief Schnibbe wrote this, “I’m happy the world we live in is getting back to normal, but geez do I love driving around town seeing people smiling, dancing and happy.  Thank you for supporting us, for partying with us and letting us enjoy your special days with you.”  He also told me that the people who have been receiving visits banded together to provide lunch for the First Responder at Bread and Brine so the cavalcade will wind up there – what a lovely gesture!

As always, the Chiefs encourage people to come out and remember to keep physically separated and to wear masks. They also suggest that the families who are receiving a visit warn neighbors so they are not alarmed. Again, Happy Birthday to everyone celebrating!

New Heartwarming News
Last week members of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary decided to deliver homemade baked goods on Memorial Day to the older veterans of the Legion. Each Auxiliary member left her batch of baked goods on the veteran’s doorstep as a way of honoring that person’s service.  It brought smiles to the faces of all the recipients – thanks ladies for doing that!

I’d also like to take a quick moment to give a shout out to our Senior Advocate, Anne Russak, who in her quiet way has made an extra effort for the seniors she serves. Even before the crisis Anne regularly called our seniors to check their welfare. She also made arrangements to have Meals-on-Wheels delivered to our most vulnerable seniors. However, since the pandemic started she has started a tradition of her own. Each Friday, she makes a homemade meal or treat to accompany the Meals-on-Wheels delivery. Ann’s meals include lentil soup, pasta fagioli, pasta and meatballs, rice pudding, cupcakes and brownies … all made from scratch by Anne herself.  There’s a different treat each week and the seniors love it … thank you Anne from the bottom of our hearts!

Same Three Requests
The three requests from last few weeks still hold – here they are again!
  • Masks: Please wear a mask if you’re out and about and in situations where social distancing is likely to be a challenge – it will protect you and others, it is still required by law, and it will be appreciated by the people you run into! This holds true if you are running errands in the Village, walking on the Aqueduct or in the Woods. Even if you think you won’t run into people make sure you have a mask with you so you can pull it out when you pass others. Some members of our community have health issues that make them more vulnerable and so the message still holds: “I protect you and you protect me.”
  • PPE: Please dispose of your PPE responsibly – if you see Mat’s red garbage cans in the Food Town parking lot or in Boulanger Plaza use those! Let’s make sure our Village stays gorgeous – no-one wants to touch discarded PPE so each of us should make a point to “leave no trace.”
  • Blowers: Don’t forget the leaf blower law is in effect – remind your landscapers no leaf blowing till the fall!  There are still reports of violations – our landscapers know the rules, please make sure you reinforce them.

As always, feel free to reach out to me if you have specific questions, concerns or stories to share: mayor@hastingsgov.org

Sincerely,
