Mayor’s Message – Local Luminaries, Unbuilt Hastings, Helping Others Enjoy Thanksgiving, New Plans for the Graham School and Congratulations Due.

Mayor
Dear everyone,

Our thanks goes out to the VFW James Daley Post 200 and the Admiral Farragut Post 1195 for their elegant and moving Veteran’s Day ceremony last week, to our Parks and Recreation team for their support, and to all the businesses that offered our veterans special discounts over the weekend. If you are a veteran, but not yet a member of either veteran’s organization, they would be delighted to hear from you.

Local Luminaries – TONIGHT! November 17, 7:30 pm, Library, Orr Room
A reminder that tonight our own Helene Godin of By the Way Bakery fame, will be speaking about “Baking and Business” at 7:30 pm in the Orr Room at the Library. Helene kept us all sane during the pandemic with her delicious treats, and tonight you can hear the story about how she metamorphosed from attorney to beloved baker. See HERE for more information.

Unbuilt Hastings Exhibit – Sunday, November 20, 2 to 4 pm, Draper Cottage
This Sunday, November 20th from 2 to 4 pm, the Historical Society, will be opening its new exhibit “Unbuilt Hastings”. It will show case projects that were planned but never built, from the expansion of a sanatorium to various visions for the waterfront.  See HERE for details.

Helping Others Enjoy Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a week away and our two favorite local charities that support the needy are themselves in need of help. Family-to-Family invites you to join their 20th annual turkey drive (see HERE) and you can also support Project Share’s 33th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the Homeless (see HERE). Project Share still needs to raise about $6,000 to host its annual dinner, which will take place this year on Tuesday evening, November 22 in the school auditorium. We also have a request from our Youth Council to support the Food Pantry – they are looking for canned goods (kidney/black beans, tuna, chicken, stews, soups, tomato sauce, vegetables, fruit etc.) as well as dried goods (pasta, mac and cheese, boxed milk) and lunch boxed sized snacks. Donations can be dropped off at the Community Center, lower level. If you have the wherewithal to support these amazing causes please do – they are worth every penny you spend on them…

New Plans for the Graham School
Electric Owl Studios, a film production sudio based in Atlanta, GA (see HERE), has been in discussions with the Graham-Windham school about acquiring their property to build a film studio in the Village. Electric Owl presented its concept to the Village Board this past Tuesday night. You can find a copy of the presentation HERE and we will provide a link to the video HERE as soon as it is available. Electric Owl would like to share its concept with core stakeholders, including people who live near by, people who might be affected by traffic, the school board and administration, the local business community, residents who are in the film business and others.  In-person and zoom meetings will be set up on November 28th (in person) and 29th (zoom) for those interested in learning more. The Board believes the project will be good for the Village and we very much welcome your thoughts on it.

Congratulations Due
Congratulations to all our newly elected representatives including Governor Hochul, Lt. Governor Delgado, Senator Schumer, Congressman Bowman, Senator Stewart-Cousins and our new Assembly member-elect Mary Jane Shimsky (though she now lives in Dobbs Ferry, she lived in Hastings for many years and we claim her as our own!). New York voters voted in favor of the Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act, which will bring a much needed financial infusion to our communities that will help us build climate resiliency. And at a hyper-local level, residents voted to move our Village elections to November. We will keep you posted about what that will entail closer to the time.

Sincerely,
