Hastings-on Hudson, NY, April 2018 — Yes, Indian Point is closing. No, the danger is not over! “Indian Point: An Ever Present Danger” — a forum to educate the public, to initiate an informed discussion about the dangers inherent in the period leading up to and after the shutdown of the power plant, and to take action will be held in Hastings-on-Hudson on Sunday, April 29.

Experts from Riverkeeper, Clearwater, and the Pace Energy and Climate Center will provide an update of the situation and speak about nuclear waste storage, how the energy provided by Indian Point will be replaced, the decommissioning process, the need for a Citizens Oversight Board, and other environmental and legal issues. Participants will learn the ways in which a grassroots movement can make a difference and how to stay involved with this issue. The event is sponsored by Hastings Takes Action/NYCD16 Indivisible Environment Committee and co-sponsored by the Hastings Conservation Commission.

The Indian Point Energy Center is slated for final shut down in 2021. The obsolescent plant, owned and operated by Entergy Corporation, has a history of safety problems, accidental leaks, and violations of federal and state regulations.  Additionally, a gas pipeline is located a mere 105 feet from critical safety infrastructure. After the plant is shut down, the decommissioning process presents a new set of challenges. These include the continued physical degradation of the plant, issues regarding responsibility and funds for clean-up and storage of over 2000 metric tons of highly radioactive material, and the potential for a catastrophic incident that could make the entire region uninhabitable.
