Announcing! the Hastings Pollinator Pathway Project!
We're launching this new community initiative in concert with the Westchester Pollinator Garden Tour - the tour is today Sunday, September 13th all day - you're invited to both!
As many of you may know, our community of pollinators are in crisis. One in four native bee species are facing extinction. There are also declines in other pollinator populations, which include beetles, ants, birds, moths, butterflies, flies, gnats, and small mammals, such as bats. Pollinators are responsible for the reproduction of 80-95% of plant species on earth. There are numerous causes for this decline, with land fragmentation and pesticide use at the top.
The bright side is that we can actively turn this around and have fun doing so! It is a joy to see a garden full of life with bees and butterflies. When we commit to expanding pollinator-friendly, pesticide-free habitats, we will change the future for pollinators and secure our own.
The Hastings Pollinator Pathway supports pollinators by strategically linking large green spaces via networks of pollinator-friendly gardens on public and private land.
Major arteries of the plan include two trails that extend into neighboring towns: the Old Croton Aqueduct & Saw Mill River’s South County Trailway. In addition, it includes the east-west connecting paths of Mt Hope Blvd and Farragut Avenue & Parkway, and most importantly, every home garden, large and small.
We are inviting every Hastings home to become a node on the path!
