Household Hazardous Waste

  • Accepts many items not allowed in curbside pickup.
  • Make an appointment via link above or call: 914-813-5425
  • The H-MRF is a 15-minutes drive from Hastings: 15 Woods Road, Valhalla, NY - click for directions
Here is a handy flyer of what the H-MRF accepts (or read below). Remember: our municipal waste is incinerated in Peekskill. Keep everyone's air clean!

And by the way: Our county prides itself in ethical electronics recycling. County staff regularly visits all-third party recylcers to confirm proper, environmentally appropriate recycling.

Most commonly: do not throw lithium or rechargeable batteries, electronics of any kind, or flourescent lightbulbs in curbside trash.

Accepted at the H-MRF:
Labeled household chemicals, including: • Most automotive fluids – antifreeze, brake fluid, gasoline (not motor oil) • Metal, jewelry and furniture polish • Pesticides, insecticides, herbicides • Photo and swimming pool chemicals • Kerosene and other flammable liquids • Wood preservatives and stains

Household items including: • Car tires (up to four per household) • Confidential documents for shredding (up to 4 file-size boxes per visit) • Propane and helium tanks • Mercury thermometers, thermostats • Electronic waste (computers and peripherals, TV’s, cell phones, etc.) • Fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs and tube-shaped fluorescent bulbs) • Refrigerant-containing appliances (air conditioners, refrigerators, dehumidifiers, etc.) • Batteries – auto, rechargeable (e.g., lithiuim-ion) & button cell (ordinary household batteries, like Duracell Coppertop, which are alkaline and carbon-zinc, can be safely discarded with the household trash) • Fire Extinguishers

Expired or unused medications: never flush these down the drain as they will contaminate the Hudson River/Atlantic Ocean. Medications can be delivered to certain pharmacies or to Hastings Police. Note: since our trash in incinerated, you can put unused pills loose in the garbage; put empty containers in your curbside recycling bin, with tops screwed on. Visit Westchester County's Safe Medication Disposal page  for more info, or call the Recycling HelpLine at (914) 813-5425.

Textiles: Westchester County has partnered with HELPSY, and you can now also drop off textile "waste" at the HMRF. See this list of accepted textiles and home furnishings. You can also drop textiles off in the Green Tree Textiles bin in Hastings' train station parking lot.

Disposing of sharps (needles, syringes and lancets) - do not put in your regular trash! For more info, review this county pdf.
