Summer in the Woods

Volunteer for the Hillside Woods Restoration Project
Dear Hastings Resident,
You and your kids are invited to volunteer for the Hillside Woods Restoration Project. There's never been a better time to work outdoors for safe socializing, healthy exercise and psychic renewal.

We've updated our Hillside Woods Restoration Project volunteer page, which tells you what you need to know to get involved (and our project homepage, where you can see pics from the kiosk dedication last Sunday :-).

We trained over 40 volunteers in-person on tree I.D., and they have marked hundreds of Norway maple and ailanthus trees in the woods. If you know your trees well, you can help review the work, which we're doing this week in small groups. Please email hillsidewoods@hastingsgov.org.

Next step is to measure these trees and record the data in a smartphone app called EpiCollect5. You're welcome to join this effort too! We plan to begin this work July 20.

Concurrently, we're pulling privet out of The Meadow, which we plan to restore to an actual meadow, full of native meadow flowers.

Sign up for sessions at signup.com. You're welcome to join any or all.

The Hillside Woods Restoration Project can use all kinds of expertise, whether hands-on and in person or digitally. We can offer students community service hours.

Finally, we're also planning on offering guided nature walks in the near future: birding, plant investigations, nature meditation, and more. Contact us if you're interested in guiding a walk.

As always, feel free to contact us with any questions, suggestions or feedback.
