Message from the mayor: Halloween follow-up, TV, Veteran's Day
Fellow Residents –

Rather then send out several emails, I am covering three disparate topics in one: a follow-up on Halloween,  news about a new TV show, and a reminder about Veteran’s Day.

First, a quick follow-up on Halloween.  We enjoyed a lovely Halloween weekend as a community.  Our request that parents cooperate on a 9PM curfew, combined with restraint displayed by our youth resulted in a generally peaceful and enjoyable weekend.  The sort of petty vandalism and mischief we saw in previous years was significantly down.

We’re pleased to announce a new television show on WHOH – “The Current”.
This half-hour talk-show format show is hosted by resident Bill McGowan, who will interview local residents on various topics of local interest.
Our first show, on this Thursday at 10AM, 12PM, 8PM, and 10PM, will include an interview with myself on the latest on the deer issue, a discussion with three students on the unprecedented successful season the soccer team is enjoying, and with Reverend Anna Pearson on the Episcopal Church’s annual Alternate Gifts Market, where residents can come to buy fair trade handicrafts from around the world, or donate money to local, national, and international good causes.  This is a professionally produced show that uses the good talents of a range of Hastings residents, including Donna Cornachio and Hillari Freireich who are producing the show, and an assist from Erik Blicker.   We expect it to air 2 to 3 times a month and always feature stories of immediate interest to Village residents.  Bill has a long history in television journalism and puts on a good show. Check it out tomorrow: I predict you’ll be surprised and charmed.

Also, tomorrow:  a reminder that it is Veterans’ Day.  The village offices and schools are closed.  Life-time resident Jack Lynch once said  "Some of our veterans are famous heroes who have received a great deal of publicity, but most are not. Most are just ordinary citizens who answered the call to duty when it came."   He’s absolutely right.  Hastings has sent off well over a thousand residents in service to our country over its history (including 600 in World War Two alone). Our veterans live amongst us:  they went and served their country, and many returned to their lives here in Hastings.  It is to these men and women, but especially to those that did not return, that we dedicate tomorrow and owe our gratitude. Life here is good. For that, let’s first begin by thanking our veterans for their service. It would be otherwise if it weren’t for men and women like them.  There is a brief service at 11:00AM before the VFW building tomorrow to commemorate the day.  Please consider attending if you are in town to honor the day, and if you own a flag, please remember to fly it in honor of them and all that is great and good about this country.
