update on storm afternmath - 8PM Sunday night
Residents -

The situation has stabilized somewhat, but arguably not improved significantly. The one Con Edison crew working in Hastings has retired for the evening after 18 hours of work - we've been promsied more crews tomorrow, but the crews are stressed by competing needs throughout the County snd tri-state region, where 120,000 customers remain out of power as of 6PM.  Outages yesterday,at the peak , exceeded by 50% the outages during the last most serious storm,  Hurricane Gloria in 1985.  Without more crews to help deactivate the lines (before they are fixed), the trees and debris blocking roads cannot be moved.  As a result, our DPW crews are at a standstill until the Con Edison crews return.  Broadway, and most other streets previously blocked, remain blocked and will remain so through at least tomorrow afternoon.  Some of the trees down are literally gigantic and may take a couple of days before they are fully removed.  Power has been restored to a a few pockets of homes, but hundreds are without power for at least tonight and it is likley to be several days before power is fully restored to all homes.

All schools are closed tomorrow: Hillside school is without power, and Shadowlawn students are isolated by downed trees and power lines that have shut Broadway.   (Dobbs and Irvington are off as well for similar reasons.)

Please check on your elderly or disabled neighbors, if you know they are without power.   This is when a village draws together and protects its own.  Please reach out, if you can, and extend an empty bedroom or warm shower to friends who could use it, and extend a hearty thanks to the next volunteer fireman or police officer you encounter. They have worked absurd shifts and hours ensuring our safety and it is in no small part due to them that no one has been injured.  We are grateful for their service.
