Residents,
The fierce windstorm has left over 70,000 homes in Westchester once again without power (and another 60,000 out in NYC). Trees and utility poles are down all over Hastings, and a number of streets are still bllocked. Con Edison has begun restoring power, focusing first on the largest utility feeder lines. (One of their stated objective is to restore power to area schools so schools will be open tomorrow.) If you are out, you may not have power restored for a couple of days: crews are stretched and focusing on major outages first. Downed trees and limbs have damaged a number of homes and cars in Hastings, though no injuries have been reported.
Our DPW crews are out, working their way through the street closings (listed below). Because of downed lines and the sizes of some of the trees down, it may be a day before all the roads are fully opened. Please do not call the Police to ask about when power or street access will be restored. Con Edison hasn't released firm dates for smaller outages yet, and our DPW crews will progress through the damage with utmost haste. Garbage removal has been cancelled for tomorrow so they can spend their time on debris removal.
Downed trees have shut the following roads:
Southgate
Broadway south of Garland
Broadway north of High
Oakdale
Fairmont
Garland Drive
Stanley and Clarence
Summit
As before, do not approach downed lines. An arcing line can jump ten feet and kill you instantly, If you are removing debris on your property, check to make sure that no downed lines are nearby or touching the downed limbs or trees.
The library is closed today. The wind blew in a large plate window at the library, which suffered some water damage as a result.
Please only call the police (478-2344) if there is a police emergency or to report an unsafe conditon or closed street not listed above.
We thank you for your forebearance and patience.
Peter
