Hastings Public Library - MAY 2014 Newsletter

Art People on the Hudson
As we announced last month, the Library has ambitious plans for expansion--an extension to the downstairs, multi-purpose room topped by a roof deck overlooking the Hudson River and the Palisades. As the kick-off to our capital campaign, the Friends are planning a fundraiser that will showcase artworks by painters, printmakers, sculptors and photographers from Hastings. The silent auction will open on Thursday, May 28, and continue here through Sunday, June 8. Bidding will end at a reception and cocktail party at the Library on June 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are only $25 per person, $40 per couple ($5 extra at the door). You may purchase your tickets at the Library or at the Farmers Market on June 7. Come, have fun, support the Library and go home with a piece of art of your desire.

More Going On In June (Do We Ever Slow Down?)
Sunday, June 22 at 2 p.m., we will host the last of our programs in the “Dewey Loves the Arts” series:
A tribute to Charlotte Zolotow, Hastings resident and author and editor of children’s’ books.
Leonard Marcus, the curator of a sweeping exhibit at the New York Public Library on the history of literature for children, will be hosting a panel to discuss this beloved figure in the world of publishing.

And are you itching for summer reading? We will begin our 22nd Summer Reading Club for children the last week in June. And adults, don’t feel left out, starting June 21, you can register for: “The Great Fiction vs. Nonfiction Reading Showdown.” All details to follow.

Synergy
That’s the word I use to describe the relationship between the Farmers’ Market and the Library.
But a few reminders of how to make “it” work:
Please, no unattended young children in the building
        Inside voices
Follow the guidelines for trash disposal and recycling
The summer Farmers’ Market schedule begins on June 7 and until the Saturday before Thanksgiving, we will be open every week at 8:15 am. Finally, to kick this season off, visit our “opening day” book sale on the Library’s front portico.
