Beginning the week of June 1, 2014, Consolidated Edison will begin a construction project to replace major sections of the natural gas pipeline in the downtown area.
This project is a result of a survey by the Company which they ranked gas line utility infrastructure and the Hastings-on-Hudson location indicated necessity to replace. The project entails upgrading the low pressure to a medium pressure line. This will enable businesses and residences to consider conversion to gas as their energy source. The aging cast-iron pipe dates back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. While currently there are no leaks it needs to be replaced. While the timing is poor, given the Westchester County rehabilitation Warburton Avenue Bridge project we believe, given the phased in planned replacement schedule it should be able to be completed with minimal disruption. To explain, the project entails installing 1,250 feet of pipe in stages. The project will be broken into seven locations, which will require roadway
opening and service connection in a limited area at a time.
The project will include sidewalk repair to those sections which are opened for service connections to approximately 60 customers. The project will take approximately three months to complete.
The road opening trench work will be done during normal business hours. However, some service connections will be off-hours. The goal is to minimize neighborhood disruption and work cooperatively with company customers. Because service connection involves product interruption the goal is to have the service connection performed at the convenience of the business owner or resident . For example, they do not want to shut off gas to a restaurant during the lunch hour or dinner hours so that work would probably be performed either early morning or after closing the establishment for the day.
The project limits are Spring St., Warburton Ave. ,West Main and Main Street. There will be reduced available on street parking at times while the work is being performed .
The Hastings-on-Hudson Police Department will play a critical role in the project as relates to public safety, traffic control and public notification.
