In March, Everyone Is a Wee Bit Irish

“Immigrants always change the United States as much as the United States changes them.” (Prof. Kevin Kenny, Boston College, 2008)

During some decades of Nineteenth century, half of all the immigrants to the U.S. came from the small island of Ireland, and Irish culture has been assimilated into American life.  Come hear local author Peter Quinn discuss his books-which-you guessed right,  tend to have an Irish theme. Peter has done it all: written fiction, non-fiction, and plays. He has also taught Irish literature and probably, being Irish, has doodled a poem or two.  Please come and enjoy a wonderful afternoon program at the Library on March 12th at 3 p.m.

Partners with Friday Night Live

March is “Literature Month” and the theme for Friday Night Live is “Hastings Off the Shelf: Celebrating the Magic of Words.”  The Library will be the site for “My Favorite Poem.”  From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m, on March 4, come and read your favorite poem or sit back and listen to someone else.  Walk-ins are welcome. In April, the theme for FNL will be visual art. The Library is partnering with the Newington Cropsey Foundation to offer a tour of this gem of a museum within our Village.

Another Local Lad, Stefan Kanfer

Local author Stefan Kanfer has successfully taken on one more Hollywood great, Humphrey Bogart.  (He previously wrote about Lucille Ball and Groucho Marx.)  The New York Times Book Review (Feb. 6) says that Kanfer’s The Life and Extraordinary Afterlife of Humphrey Bogart explains why Bogart was the most important film actor of his time and place and, evidently, the most influential from beyond the grave.  “Bogart’s enduring place in the culture has been secured not only by his skills as an actor but also by our chronic nostalgia for his brand of masculinity,” according to this very favorable review.

Stress Reliever

Medical studies have shown that knitting is one of those calming and relaxing activities that actually relieve stress.  Heart rates decrease, breathing slows and brain waves settle down a bit.  Hastings resident Debra Lee and librarian Jeanne Bastone will lead sessions of beginner’s knitting in March (date and time TBA).

Another Stress Reliever

Patrons often ask, “Where am I on the reserve/holds list?”  Please remember that Hastings patrons will receive Hastings items first. PLUS,  the libraries in the Westchester Library System often own multiple copies of items which, when pooled together, make long queues move quickly. So the answer is "we can tell you, but it may not be as far down as it appears."

Happy Reading!
