Introducing the Conservation Commission of Hastings-on-Hudson.

Greetings,
We hope your 2011 is off to a good start.
The Conservation Commission is a municipal body whose responsibility is to advise the Board of Trustees on matters of environmental conservation and to inform the larger community on matters relating to sustainability. It is an allvolunteer commission that has recently reorganized and reenergized itself.

We are currently working on
a) improving recycling and reducing waste, including yard waste
b) improving walkability and transportation - we assisted the village in procuring the new, hybrid-electric senior van
c) establishing a Village Green Team and monitoring energy consumption to take steps to reduce our carbon footprint
d) greening our building code

Every resident can take part in conservation with some simple steps. Asan outreach reminder, we’ve added a monthly suggestion to our village calendar and provide detailed information on each suggestion on our web page.
January’s tip was to change your incandescent bulbs to CFLs or LEDs.
February’s tip is to lower your thermostat. March’s tip will be to compost yard and food waste. Our web page will tell you how these actions will save you money and what positive effects you will have on the environment by taking these small steps. See information on our site at: http://hastingsgov.org/Pages/HastingsNY_BComm/Conservation/index.

Collectively, we can make a big difference.
We welcome your feedback including questions and suggestions on matters of environmental stewardship, sustainability, and resource management. We also welcome volunteers.
Official members of theConservation Commission are appointed by the Village Board of Trustees, but our meetings are open to the public and we always welcome volunteers to assist with our projects. Please join us. We meet monthly on the second Tuesday of the month at 8 pm at the Municipal Building conference room on the 2nd floor.

With kind regards,
Hasting-on-Hudson Conservation Commission
