Hastings Off the Shelf -- Friday, March 4 


In collaboration with the Hastings Village Arts Commission, Friday Night Live kicks off its 2011 season on Friday, March 4th, with Hastings Off the Shelf, a community-wide series of events celebrating the magic of words, their hold on our imagination.

 

Timed to coincide with March is Literature Month, Hastings Off the Shelf features:
HFNL Writing Contest
Theme: Imagine Spring
Form: Unpublished short (flash) fiction or poetry.
The challenge: 100 words or less.
Who can enter: Open to all ages.
No entry fee. All ages. Details to come.  Entry deadline: Feb 28, 2011.
Submissions should be sent to FNL@hastingsgov.org 
Artist Marie Claude Giroux’s sneak preview from the Memory Lane “birdhouse” book.  Will she be reading your entry? 
Teen Poetry Slam 
Activities for kids of all ages and their families. Materials provided.  
Hastings resident storytellers, folklorists, and poets presenting their latest, greatest, on the shelf, undercover, or in-progress work. 
Common Ground Downtown presents An Evening of Spoken Word Poetry and World-Class Jazz
Headlining the evening at 8:30 will be The Hastings Jazz Collective, featuring Tim Armacost, Jay Azzolina, David Janeway, Dean Johnson, and Ron Vincent. From 7-8 pm, Janeway, Johnson and Vincent will improvise accompaniment to original spoken word poetry, performed by local poets, including Ann Van Buren, Monique Avakian, Golda Solomon, and others.
