The Place To Be

One of the goals of the Library renovation (2001-2002) was to provide meeting rooms to local non-profit groups.  This spring, InterVillage Continuing Education will offer, at the Library, Hastings' own Barbara Morrow teaching a course on mythology.  (Many of you know her from her previous classes on The Iliad and The Odyssey.)  As a resource for the course, we recently bought The Classical Tradition published by Harvard University Press, which was a New York Times editor’s choice for 2010.  This reference book has more than 500 articles on Greek and Roman literature, philosophy, art, architecture, history, politics and religion.  Ms. Morrow has quite a devoted-but not exclusive-following.  Consider studying about a different place and time from the comfort of your home away from home.

Home With a Cold and Avoiding the Cold?

Just re-read Goodnight Moon for the 18th time…in the last 10 minutes…to your toddler?  Don’t despair! Even when you can’t get out to the Library for more books, new titles can come to you.  Yes, there are e-books for kids.  Go to www.westchesterlibraries.org and click on Tumblebooks, an online collection of talking picture books.  Of course, you will now have to share your computer with a two year old!

So Many Books, So Little Time

Many patrons love book recommendations.  Many book clubs like suggestions.  The Library just purchased Read This Next: 500 of the Best Books You’ll Ever Read.  Grouped by general topic, this guide introduces new titles for consideration and reminds one of favorites from years gone by.

If you like bibliographies dedicated to specific subjects.  Our “Alexes” (Ms. Gaete at the front desk and Ms. Hall, well, all over the building) have got you covered. They've started producing their own pamphlets.  So far we have one on breast cancer, one on our new foreign film collection and the just released “Eating healthy, exercising and changing the way you think.”  These are available at the circulation desk and each highlight titles in our own collection.

Hard Choices

The Queens Public Library has announced that it will not be buying any new books, at least until June.  How many of you rush to put the latest bestseller on reserve via the Westchester Library System?  The Queens Library decided to maintain service hours, classes and programs at the sacrifice of books.  All library communities will face, over the coming months, difficult financial decisions as we try to fulfill the needs and expectations of all patrons.  Tax dollars are stretched everywhere and so we thank everyone who joined or renewed their membership with the Friends of the Library.  The Friends so often provide what you, the patrons, ask for: new materials for borrowing, programs for toddlers, classes for adults and comfortable furniture for just sitting and gazing upon the Hudson.

Two Easy Fundraisers

The Library is collecting both "Box Tops for Education" and "Labels for Education" for the Hillside PTSA. These labels can be found on various food articles and are redeemed for points that can be used towards school equipment and supplies.

There is also a book drive going on for new and gently used children's books being run by a Hastings student for LitWorld, a non-profit organization that donates books to children in need. Please drop off any spare books to the collection box located in the children's section of the library.

Thank you for your participation!
