Support the Library While Indulging Yourself!
Did you miss our Baketique/Boutique on December 4th? Don’t fret, we are having another one on Saturday, December 18th from 9:30 am-5:00 pm.  On sale will be home-made baked goods, and hostess gifts and stocking stuffers.  The Village allocation of monies supports personnel costs, our beautiful facility and insures that we maintain hours of service seven days a week. A large proportion of the budget for materials to borrow, computers to use and programs to attend comes from the fundraising activities of the Friends of the Library and the Library Board of Trustees.  So, on December 18th come shop and know that you are helping to support a vital Village institution.

Cozy up with a Good Magazine
The Library subscribes to a large number of magazines covering the world of news, science and nature, home and garden, travel, American culture, local history, technology, health and family and literature.  On any given day adults sit on the sofas, facing the majestic Hudson River, and thumb through our collection.  Now you can borrow many of the back issues, take them home, curl up on your favorite chair (perhaps sipping tea and noshing on a cookie bought at our Baketique) and read a short  story in the “New Yorker  or an interview from “Rolling Stone.”  FYI, we will not be loaning weekly news magazines, magazines with recipes, etc..  If, however, you have a special request, please speak to a librarian.

Beginning in January, the Library will be subscribing to two very unique magazines: “Cure,” which combines science and humanity in making cancer understandable and “Renew,” a resource for people recovering from addiction as they strive to live a sober and healthy lifestyle.
Activities for a "Staycation"
The Library has partnered with the Hudson River Museum to provide patrons with a free pass (for the whole family) to visit the museum and planetarium.  Please inquire at the front circulation desk for details.

From Mrs. Vallaincourt's Corner
We have added a number of Playaways which are pre-loaded audio books on their own small “MP3” players.  They are perfect for children as there is no special equipment, juggling of CD’s or complicated downloads from a computer.  Just check one out, pop in the battery (which we provide) and start to listen.  PS parents, these might be good for a long car ride over the holidays.

We used to know all of the school assignments from the days when kids would come in and borrow books on various subjects studied in the school curriculum.  Now, much homework is supported by resources from the Internet.  However, nothing beats a book for organization of material, context and photographs.  Recent additions to the children’s room include the full set of (publisher) Mason Crest guide books (appropriate for grades 4-8) for Central America, the Caribbean and South America.

Last, my book pick of the month is “Hillel” by Joseph Telushkin.  Written by a rabbi, this biography of the 1st century BCE sage has appeal beyond Jewish studies.  Hillel’s wise sayings, including “That which is hateful to you do not do to your fellow,” speak to universal questions of theology and philosophy.

On that note, I wish all our patrons, those who visit us every day, and those who use the Library by remote access, a happy holiday season.

Happy Reading!
