Message from the mayor: so much to do this weekend, this season of light
Fellow Residents –

Heading into the holiday season, we have before us four days of activities in our little village that speak to the holiday spirit, to the arts, to the season of light.  There’s quite a bit here, so browse the opportunities, (and all are free!):

Friday (Friday Night Live)

Tree Lighting:

The Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony festivities will begin at 6PM at the VFW Park with the singing of holiday songs by the Hudson Valley Singers.  Following the Tree Lighting at 6:30PM, children and adults of all ages will have the opportunity to visit with our special guest from the North Pole and enjoy light refreshments at the Community Center.

Arts Reception:

You may have seen the colorful spirit homes on stilts by the Community Center, library, and elsewhere. Meet the artist, Marie-Claude Giroux, at the Opening Reception of tomorrow from 6p.m. to 8p.m. at Human Bodyworks, 32 Main Street, Hastings-on-Hudson. This public art, the first of a series sponsored by our Arts Commission, is intended to elicit memories, hopes and dreams of home and community.  You can leave memories at miniatures of the sculptures placed at the Library, the Station Café and the Community Center or at www.4memorylane.com.

Crafts Workshop:

From 7pm - 8:30pm, come to the Community Center for a Beading Workshop: make a beautiful necklace or bracelet to give as a gift or keep for yourself!  All materials and supplies included. Or attend a Photography Workshop  (ages 8 to 88) and in 15 minutes you will learn how to dramatically improve your travel/family photos, including special tips on cell phone photography

Saturday

Library Bake Sale:

From 9:30 to 5PM at the library. Fresh-from-scratch cakes and cookies, great for the holidays and supports our library to boot.

Historic Society:

The Historic society is open from 10AM to 2PM at the Draper House with a great display of maps of Hastings from 1779 to now.
Hannukah:
Finally, on Saturday, we continue celebrating the Season of Lights with the lighting of the fourth Hanukkah candle after sundown at 7PM. A menorah has been set up on the VFW lawn, right by the holiday tree. The candle will be lit by Rabbi Silverman of Chabad, and the lighting will be followed by some live folk music provided by a small band, and some kosher food and drink. This will all be held outside, so come dressed warmly!

Sunday

Arts and Crafts by local artists continue on display and for sale at the Community Center from 11am to 5 pm.

Monday

Art Exhibit Opening:

A fascinating art exhibit, “Brave New Worlds: Ritalin, Robots and Revolution”, opens Monday night from 7pm - 9pm.  Come attend the opening night reception at 45 Main St. as 12 Milesnorth welcomes 60 SUNY Purchase students into the Hastings Community for light refreshments, conversation and their multi-media presentation.   Through visual art, music, poetry and ~performance, these artists investigate the geographic, political, social, technological, and aesthetic frontiers that most urgently confront us in the 21st century.  Curated by 12 Milesnorth and SUNY Purchase faculty, this exhibit offers the opportunity for a dynamic exchange between SUNY Purchase and the wider Westchester community.

This is a ridiculously rich palette of celebrations, sales, art shows and opportunities.  Come join your fellow residents and celebrate this season, enjoy the arts, see some history or buy some art made by your neighbors. A pretty great way to spend the weekend and kick off the winter. Come on out
