DAYLIGHT SAVINGS ENDS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 7 AT 2AM
"IT'S TIME TO CHANGE SMOKE ALARM BATTERIES"
Don't forget to turn your clocks back tonight before bed - daylight savings time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 7
The Hastings-on-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department reminds residents "It's also the time to put fresh batteries in your smoke detectors."
The International Association of Fire Fighters is also urging people to change to photoelectric smoke alarms. About 90 percent of homes are equipped with traditional ionization smoke alarms.
The IAFF says research shows photoelectric smoke alarms are more effective at warning of smoke from smoldering fires - the kind of fires that typically occur at night when people are asleep. With earlier warning, people have more time to escape a burning structure and call 911 sooner, they say.
Photoelectric smoke alarms also are less susceptible to nuisance alarms. To prevent nuisance alarms, citizens often disable smoke alarms, placing themselves, others in a home or building and firefighters at greater risk, the group says.
