Fellow residents,
It's not just a long weekend: Memorial Day marks a moment of remembrance for those who have given their lives in defense of our country in days past, and present. With the thousandth service casualty in Afghanistan reached last week, we're reminded that every day, we are served with more sacrifice on our behalf. It's humbling.
Honoring our local and national vets, tomorrow the Village hosts a Memorial Day parade. If you haven't checked it out before, it's the real deal: vets marching, (with a few in shiny convertibles), fire trucks, bands, scouts, police, volunteer firemen, and several marching bands. It starts at 3PM at Washington Avenue and ends thirty minutes later in front of the VFW building in the center of the downtown. It's fun, lively, genuine and entirely charming. It's one of the sweetest fruits of living in ourl village and you shouldn't miss it if you can. The speaker at the ceremony that follows is a Hastings resident recently graduated from West Point and now off to serve his country. It's going to be sunny and hot so wear a hat and bring a cold drink and be prepared to clap.
(There's also a quiet and dignified ceremony held by the fire companies at 9:30 in the morning tomorrow, right by the Community Center, in memory of our vets. It's a simple reminder as well that the weekend is more than just barbecues. Also, if you own an American flag, there's no better a weekend to fly it.)
Finally, on a casual note, you have a few more hours today, Saturday, (till 8PM) to get into the Village pool for free. Tomorrow and Monday, the pool is open from 10 -8 (but not free) and you can sign up on the spot at the early-bird discounted levels and get in. The water's 72 degrees and the weather perfect.
Enjoy your weeekend,
Peter Swiderski
