Residents,
After a interminable winter, it’s a relief to get outdoors. The trees are in bloom, gardens are coming in, and lawns look as good as they will ever look thanks to all the rain we have gotten. This weekend has activities for families, art-lovers and gardeners around town that I wanted to share with you.
Reading Party
Today, Friday, April 29 from7pm - 9pm, there will be readings of original stories and live music to benefit families in need.. Live music by Dandelion and Acoustic Riverrun with Adam Hart, Ken Tuccillo and Mark Kaufman. Free food and drink. $20 admission (100% tax deductible). All proceeds will go directly to SPRING and the Hastings Youth Council to provide food for local families in need. Doors open at 7 PM. Seating on a first-come, first-serve basis.
“Jamnesty”
A High School group that supports Amnesty International is sponsoring an outdoor benefit concert at the Burke Estate this Saturday from 12 to 4PM. A number of student bands will perform while activities and crafts will be offered for families, with barbecue and popcorn available to sate hunger. Stop by, listen to some music, grab a bite and enjoy the afternoon. All proceeds benefit Amnesty Intl.
Spring Plant Sale
“Friends of Charlie” are running their annual plant sale this Saturday as well from 10AM to 3PM. It’s at the American Legion Post at 215 Farragut and all proceeds go directly to a scholarship fund for Hastings High School students. (The foundation was set up in memory of Charlie Murray, a beloved life-long resident who worked for the village, was a volunteer for the fire department, and whose spirit and dedication to community service will not be soon forgotten.)
Studio Tour
On both Saturday (11AM to 6PM) and Sunday (noon to 5PM), you can enjoy the annual Studio Tour, a signature event of the RiverArts organization. Artists from around the area,( included 27 from Hastings alone!), are either exhibiting out of their home studios or at the Community Center. This annual event is a remarkable introduction and opportunity to support our wide range of talented local artists. A full-color map and brochure is available here: http://riverarts.org/_images/VisualArtsImages/StudioTour11/StudioTour2011_Map.pdf
Next Friday, May 6: Friday Night Live
Finally, a reminder that we have our monthly Friday Night Live on May 6, this one with a dancing theme. Warburton Avenue is closed from 5:30 onwards as dance lessons, performances and music fill the downtown until 8:30 and then moves indoors to the Community Center where a swing dance band will perform while instructors will provide Swing dance instruction for those interested in joining on the dance floor. A full schedule can be found at: http://www.rivertownsguide.com/fnl
I hope you’ll have a chance to get out and enjoy the events, tours and sales around the Village on this beautiful Spring weekend.
Sincerely
Peter Swiderski
Mayor
